BAGHDAD (AP) -- Officials say gunmen have killed at least 10 Iraqi soldiers in an early morning raid on a small military outpost in central Iraq.

Police say the assailants stormed the army base in the town of Dujail, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, before dawn Sunday and took the sleeping soldiers by surprise.

Police say eight soldiers were wounded in the raid, and the gunmen escaped without being captured.

Hospital officials in the nearby town of Balad confirmed the casualties.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.
