KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) -- The U.S. has paid compensation for the victims of the massacre in southern Afghanistan attributed to a U.S. soldier.

An Afghan official and a community elder say families of those killed have been paid $50,000 for each of those killed, while those wounded have received $11,000.

A U.S. official confirms that there have been payments but would not discuss amounts.
