VIDEO: Power plant imploded: Watch the South Bay Power Plant fall in California

Early Saturday morning the South Bay Power Plant was destroyed in Chula Vista, California on the shores of San Diego Bay.

The plant was built in the late 1950s but was shut down at the end of 2010.

Since then, work crews have removed asbestos, disconnected electrical lines and removed fuel.

To bring down the plant, San Diego's 10News learned that crews used 200 pounds of detonating charges to set off more than 300 pounds of dynamite.

Port officials say heavy equipment will be used to break up the resulting wreckage, which could include 21,000 tons of recyclable metals.
