MARGATE, Fla. - Margate police Saturday identified the shoplifting suspect who fatally shot a Walmart security employee who tried to stop him from taking two packages of T-shirts.
Police say Terrell Kennith Johnson, 22, shot the store's asset protection associate, Lewis Jhon, around 7:15 p.m. Friday, at 5555 W Atlantic Blvd., in Margate.
Jhon, 49, of Coral Springs had detained the Hollywood man and was shot during questioning. Jhon was pronounced dead at Broward Health North Medical Center, Lt. Andy Zettek said.
A large perimeter was set up and a police dog, two blocks away from the Walmart, found the body of a man matching the description of the suspect, Zettek said.
"A person was located with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound that we believe may be our suspect here," he said.
Jhon was a longtime employee who was well liked by both co-workers and police officers who dealt with him on a regular basis, Zettek said.
Detectives are still searching for a heavy-set woman in a flowery sun dress who was seen leaving the Walmart in a light colored Mercedes Benz with a sunroof.
Surveillance pictures are being circulated with the hope someone will recognize the suspect and the woman and identify them for Margate Police, by calling 954-972-7111.
