PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Health Department employee who is suspected of stealing patients personal information is facing charges.
Thea Green, 25, is an ex-medical clerk and investigators said she stole more than 100 identities.
Since last summer, Devon Brautigam has been wondering who and why someone would steal his information.
He said getting taken advantage of is nothing new for him.
The 19-year-old was born with Asperger's Syndrome and said he's been bullied a lot.
"it just hurts me that bullying is one of those things that no matter how hard you try, you can't get rid of it," he said.
Normally he knows who is taking advantage of him.
Last summer when his mom Yvonne told him his identity was stolen, he wondered who could it be this time.
"First thing that went through my mind was disbelief just thinking how could this happen," Brautigam said.
His mom asked the same thing considering she's always claimed him on her taxes.
"He doesn't work or anything. Who could possibly do this?" Yvonne asked.
Investigators believe it was Thea Green.
The former medical records clerk is suspected of stealing information from patients from Palm Beach, Martin and Miami-Dade counties, as well as other states.
The bulk of them were born in the 1990s.
"She was given power over our medical records and personal information and she abused that," Brautigam said. "It's a morally wrong thing to do."
Detectives said Green tried shipping a package containing documents with patients personal information from a Riviera Beach UPS store to a woman in Jacksonville.
"These are adults that are handling sensitive information they should know right from wrong," Yvonne said. "They should. They're adults."
The arrest affidavit said she was sending the information to 23-year-old Carmel Linot of Jacksonville.
The Internal Revenue Service was already investigating Linot because she was said to be recruiting high school students to open bank accounts to deposit fraudulent tax returns.
Green was fired from the Palm Beach County Health Department in July.
