LARGO, Fla. -- A jury found a home daycare worker guilty of manslaughter Thursday. Stephanie Spurgeon was charged with murder when a 1-year-old died after being in her care.
Spurgeon, 37, was arrested in 2008 at her home on Edgehill Drive, where she ran a licensed home day-care center.
In August of that year, investigators say 1-year-old Marcia Harris was dropped off at Spurgeon's home. The child's family said the girl was alert and happy when she was dropped off, but was sluggish and sleepy when they picked her up. It was the first day Harris was in Spurgeon's care.
She quickly became unresponsive and her family took her to the hospital where she was treated for serious head injuries, according to the Sheriff's Office. Harris died several days later.
According to deputies, Spurgeon aggressively shook the baby. She was initially charged with aggravated child abuse in August but the charge was upgraded to murder following a two and a half month investigation.
Spurgeon turned in her daycare license following her arrest.
She is expected to be sentenced shortly.
