FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Police have arrested a man they say robbed a Burger King by using the restaurant's drive-through area as a dive-through.
Edwin Walker, 31, a transient man who frequents the Fort Lauderdale area, leapt through the drive-through window of a Burger King, 666 W. Broward Blvd., on Monday morning, stealing money from the register, according to Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Detective Travis Mandell.
Walker was getting ready to flee through the same window, police said. But a female employee, Tanya Calvin, refused to let him get away, grabbing him by the shirt, she said.
She and other employees detained Walker until police arrived. He was arrested on one count of strong arm robbery, police said.
"He wanted to take the money, and I wouldn't let him," Calvin said Tuesday. "It was either me or him, and it was him."
According to police:
The robbery began about 6:30 a.m. Monday, while Walker stood outside the restaurant and saw a customer hand an employee money for food at the drive-through. Walker saw the cash register inside open. He jumped on the hood of the customer's vehicle and leapt through the open drive-through window.
Inside, he pushed aside an employee and began stealing from the cash register. Walker, with money in hand, tried to make his getaway through the window, when employees stopped him.
Police reviewed surveillance footage to verify Walker was the dive-through robber.
Calvin said she didn't have any time to react.
"The guy just came through the window, and it was crazy," she said.
As the robbery happened, she said she just turned around and grabbed the guy, and was glad the rest of the restaurant's crew helped.
On Tuesday, Walker appeared in Broward magistrate court, where Judge John "Jay" Hurley set his bond at $10,000 with conditions should Walker bond out.
"Stay away from the Burger King," Hurley told Walker.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information to phone police Detective Allen Diamond at 954-828-5539.
