WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Michael Brewer was the victim of a violent attack in 2009 when investigators say he was set on fire by his friends, but now he is in trouble of his own after police say they arrested him with drugs.
Brewer has been charged with multiple counts including possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug equipment.
He was booked into the jail just before 2 a.m. Thursday and bonded out Thursday afternoon on a $6000 bond.
"These charges are not that serious. They are possession of a couple of drugs. They are the least serious felonies you could have," Public Defender Steve Benedict said after the hearing.
Police say they pulled Brewer over after he ran a red light on Belvedere road. According to the police report, he told officers some of the drugs were his.
Brewer's family was in court in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday because one of the teen's attackers, Denver Jarvis, was asking for less probation.
"Michael is doing okay and coming along even though he has a rough road to come…this has been hard on the family," Brewer's grandmother Reenie Brewer said Wednesday.
Reenie Brewer did not want to comment on the arrest Thursday and said her family needs privacy.
In the hearing Thursday, the judge offered to let Brewer out of jail on his own recognizance if he agreed to random drug testing. Instead, according to the bondsman, his family paid the $6000 bond to get him out.
