The pilot of a single-engine plane that struck a fence while taxiing at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport on Friday had a medical emergency and later died, officials said.

The pilot was identified as Louis Grabiec, 64, the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office said. An autopsy will be conducted Saturday to determine cause of death.

Grabiec, whose hometown was unavailable, was transported to Holy Cross Hospital because of his medical condition and not because of injuries sustained in the crash, said Matt Little, a Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman. He later died.

Grabiec was the only occupant of the plane.
