OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a Fort Lauderdale man died when his vehicle struck a palm tree a few minutes after he had stolen a 12-pack of beer from a gas station.
Broward County Sheriff's officials say employees at a BP gas station flagged down a deputy to report the theft of a case of beer about 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
The deputy found the suspect's gold Chrysler Sebring wrapped around a palm tree a short distance away with a cold pack of Budweiser inside. Oakland Park Fire Rescue officials pronounced 36-year-old Wyman Sims dead at the scene.
Officials say the Sebring had a temporary tire on the right rear of the car, which could have caused the suspect to lose control. An investigation continues.
