JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Officials in north Florida say a man was killed when a trash bin struck him in a bizarre crash at a grocery store parking lot.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman J.C. Hurst says an 18-year-old swerved to miss a Winn-Dixie employee who was emptying the trash about 7 p.m. Saturday. His vehicle hit a trash bin and sideswiped another vehicle. The trash bin then struck a 68-year-old man who was standing nearby.
The Florida Times-Union reports the man was tossed into the air. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The store employee received minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Police say they don't know why the man was standing near the trash bin. They also don't know how fast the vehicle was traveling. No charges have been filed, but police were questioning the driver and witnesses.
Authorities did not release the names of the victim or the driver.
