DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - A 23-year-old Deerfield Beach man who confessed to stabbing a homeless man to death was being held in isolation in the Broward County Jail on Sunday, according to his father.

John Stabile appeared before a judge Sunday on charges of first-degree homicide. He is held without bond.

Police say John Stabile on Saturday used a butcher knife to kill a 42-year-old homeless man as he slept in a grassy alleyway between a bar and a clothing store in the 2000 block of Ocean Drive in Deerfield Beach. Stabile told police he waited for the man to die and then called 911 to report the slaying.

The Broward Sheriff's Office has not released the name of the victim.
