COOPER CITY, Fla. (AP) -- South Florida deputies fatally shot a woman armed with what turned out to be a BB gun following a brief standoff in a suburban neighborhood Monday, the Broward Sheriff's Office reported.
Lisa Taylor, 44, called 911 shortly after 9 a.m. from her home in the Rock Creek community of Cooper City, BSO reported. She told the operator that she was "gonna kill somebody" and that she had a gun. Taylor hung up, and while the 911 operator tried to call her back, deputies were dispatched to the scene.
Responding deputies encountered Taylor, who was armed with what appeared to be a gun, BSO reported. The woman was walking in the street when the uniformed deputies approached and gave Taylor several verbal commands to drop her weapon. One sergeant and two deputies fired when Taylor refused to comply and pointed her gun at them, the sheriff's office reported.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue rushed Taylor to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. No other injuries were reported.
An off-duty Pembroke Pines officer was driving in the area at the time of the shooting. The windshield of the vehicle he and his father were traveling in was struck by one of the deputies' bullets, but neither the officer nor his father was injured.
While taking statements and reviewing evidence Monday, detectives learned Taylor was armed with a Crosman pistol, which shoots 6mm BBs.
The shooting remains under investigation. The three deputies involved were placed on administrative assignment, which is standard in all deputy-involved shootings.
