NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) -- Police arrested two students at school in North Port after a gun was found on campus.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune ( http://bit.ly/WPsZ6q0 reports officials were tipped off about the 9 mm handgun when a student told a teacher Tuesday afternoon at Imagine School.
North Port Police Capt. Anthony Sirianni says officials on the school's upper campus - for grades 6 through 10 - confiscated the gun about 3:30 p.m. in 13-year-old's backpack. Sirianni says a 12-year-old had given the gun to the boy.
The boys were arrested and taken to a juvenile justice facility in Sarasota. They are charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
Principal Justin Matthews says the penalty for bringing a gun to school is a 10-day suspension and a recommendation for a one-year-expulsion.
