DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - A would-be robber shot a golfer in the back at the Deerfield Country Club on Thursday evening, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The wounded golfer, 35, was near the 17th hole with another golfer when two masked men who had been hiding in nearby bushes jumped out and tried to rob them, authorities said.

The golfer was taken to North Broward Medical Center and was in surgery late Thursday. His condition was not available, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Jachles.

The second golfer was not injured in the shooting, which happened shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The names of both golfers were not released Thursday night, but Jachles said they are both from Deerfield Beach.

Deputies used a helicopter and K-9 teams to search the area around the golf course, which sits just north of Hillsboro Boulevard and east of Interstate 95, but were unable to find any suspects Thursday evening.

Officials did not have a description of the robbers but said they were spotted running east off of the golf course into a neighboring residential area after the shooting.

The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
