George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin case update: Sanford may soon have a new police chief

SANFORD, Fla. -- The police agency that first investigated Trayvon Martin's death may soon have a new chief.

Sanford's city manager on Tuesday made a job offer to the deputy police chief in Elgin, Ill.

City officials are now waiting to see if Cecil Smith accepts the offer for the job that comes with a $110,000 salary.

If he accepts the job, Smith, who is African American, will take over an agency that has had an uneasy relationship with Sanford's black community.

Martin's parents criticized the agency for not arresting neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman immediately after the shooting death of their son.

Zimmerman wasn't arrested until 44 days after Martin's death last February.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense.
