George Zimmerman may be charged soon in Trayvon Martin case, attorney announces 'new information'

The state attorney investigating the Trayvon Martin shooting case said Tuesday night she would announce "new information on the case within the coming days."

Martin is the Florida teen shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in February. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense.

The prosecutor's announcement fueled speculation Zimmerman could get charged soon. Meanwhile, Zimmerman's legal team has stepped down due to not being able to contact their client -- and Martin's family is speaking out.

Zimmerman's now former attorneys said they last spoke with him on Sunday.

"We've lost contact with him," said attorney Craig Sonner. "Up to this point, we've had contact everyday. He's gone on his own. I'm not sure what he's doing or who he's talking to."

Sonner said Zimmerman did not contact the prosecutors' office directly, and even suggested Zimmerman may have left Florida. He does believe he is still in the country.

The attorney for Martin's family said that makes Zimmerman a flight risk and he should be charged.

"We do have a lot of anxiety over the simple fact that nobody knows where the killer of Trayvon Martin is, that he is unaccounted for," said Benjamin Crump, the Martin family's attorney.

Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton said she wants the case settles in court.

"He will have the chance to have his day in court where he can plea for his self defense, if that's what he wants to use," Fulton said. "But we just want him to be arrested so he can come before a judge and jury."

Zimmerman's former attorneys say they will take him back as a client, if he asks.

The special prosecutor has not indicted when she will decide whether to file charges against Zimmerman.

She said Tuesday she'll hold a news conference within 72 hours -- which means by Friday night.

If she declines to prosecutor Zimmerman, a separate Justice Department investigation could lead to a prosecution.
