FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A soldier from southwest Florida has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Tuesday the death of 40-year-old Spc. Carlos J. Negron of Fort Myers who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He died July 10 from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with rifle and small arms fire.

He was assigned to 426th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
