Gov. Rick Scott has found another way to irk university professors in the state: he’s posting their salaries online.
The salaries of state university professors, and all public employees in the state, have always been public record. But usually it takes some digging to find it. No more. You can find them on the website, floridahasarighttoknow.com.
"The governor feels like there needs to be transparency and this is one way he's made getting access to these public records easy for everybody," Scott spokesman Lane Wright told the Orlando Sentinel.
Tom Auxter, a a University of Florida professor who heads a statewide university faculty group, told the Gainesville Sun that this is part of Scott’s attempts to push for “radical changes” for university professors. Scott has expressed interest in ending tenure and weeding out unproductive professors.
Critics also say many of the largest salaries are funded primarily through outside grant dollars, not through the state.
So who are the highest paid professors in the state? They are physicians, and in many cases serve in administration roles as well.
In the top spot is Dr. Neil Fenske a professor and dermatologist at the University of South Florida in Tampa, who makes $1.2 million. According his USF profile, he was named in 2008 as one of Women’s Health Magazine’s top 17 dermatologists for women.
The second highest earner is Dr. William Friedman ($808,437), a neurosurgeon at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and third place goes to Dr. Kevin E. Behrns ($636,123), the chairman of the department of surgery at UF.
Closer to home, Florida Atlantic University’s top earning professor is Dr. Michael Friedland ($318,121), who heads up FAU’s new medical school . It should be noted that Friedland is also a vice president of the university.
At Florida International University, founding dean Dr. John Rock is the highest paid, at $522,750.
