Erin Lyman: Woman, 23, arrested, 'hobble strapped' at Hard Rock, ordered not to return

Lady Luck apparently wasn't on Erin Lyman's side Sunday afternoon.

The 23-year-old woman has been ordered not to return to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino after she allegedly kicked a security guard in the groin, yelled profanities, kicked police and was "hobble strapped" to prevent her from kicking anyone else.

Charged with battery and resisting arrest, Lyman's bond was set at $1,000 during a first appearance court hearing Monday morning.

"They said you were creating all kinds of problems out there," Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley said in bond court, reading from Lyman's arrest report. "They said you were drinking. They said you were at the center bar and they asked you to leave. They said you pushed one of the security guards and then kicked another one in the groin."

Lyman, who stands 5-3 and weighs 125 pounds, was arrested at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Then when you were on your way out, you kicked a security guard again in the groin," Hurley said. "It says that once you were in custody by the Seminole police you were still aggressive and irate, yelling profanities in front of the patrons in the casino."

Lyman also kicked police, Hurley said. "And then they had to hobble strap you to prevent you from kicking anyone else."

A hobble strap is a device infrequently used to restrain a prisoner's legs and ankles, said Gary Bitner, spokesman for the Seminole Tribe.

"They may be used once a month, so it's not something that you see commonly," Bitner said. "They're used when a subject has a penchant for kicking."

Bitner described a hobble strap as "an updated version of leg irons, but with a benefit. They're easier to put on and softer, but secure."

A hobble strap also has an extra strap that can be closed into the back door of a police car, preventing a prisoner from kicking out windows or the cage separating the front and back seats, Bitner said.

"Essentially the strap hangs out the door, they close the door on the strap and that holds the legs of the person in that location so they can't roll around and kick in the back," he said.

Police arrived at the casino at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday and spent nearly three hours dealing with the feisty woman, Bitner said.

Lyman told the judge she moved to South Florida from New York about eight months ago and works as a manager in a girlfriend's store.

"I'm going to order you not to return to the Seminole Hard Rock," Hurley said. "I'm going to also order you not to return to anywhere on the Seminole Reservation."
