Coast Guard rescues four fishermen stranded at sea for 5 days without food or water

Four Bahamian fishermen are alive thanks in part to a rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The men became stranded at sea when their two small fishing boats became disabled and they spent five days without food or water, according to the Coast Guard.

The men had launched from a larger boat called Tropic Explorer and failed to return Saturday.

A small plane later spotted the men and relayed the information to the Coast Guard.

An air crew from Miami zeroed in on the group about 50 miles south of Andros Island, and dropped food and a communications radio.

The Coast Guard then dispatched a helicopter crew which met up with the men and brought them on board for a trip to Nassau.
 
"This was a great case with a great outcome," said Cmdr. Louie Parks said in a written release.
