FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Police are investigating after a 3-year-old girl was found in a car with the bodies of two gunshot victims in southwest Florida. The child was not harmed.
Fort Myers Police found 23-year-old Jerrett Byrd and 16-year-old Chariah Owens inside the car around 4 a.m. Tuesday. They had multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was asleep in the backseat when police found her. She is Owens' cousin.
It's unclear what prompted the shooting or why the child was with the victims. Police said they have contacted her parents.
The child was taken to the hospital and later released to the custody of state child welfare officials.
Authorities are combing the crime scene for clues and have moved the car to a secure location.
