Alligator attacks Florida woman in southern Collier County

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - The 90-year-old Collier County woman attacked by an alligator Wednesday remains in critical condition Thursday morning after part of her leg was amputated.

As of 9 a.m. Thursday, Margaret Webb of Copeland remains in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report said Webb’s left leg was amputated from the knee down after alligator in her front-yard canal came up and bit her at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. She was also had less severe bites on her right leg, the report said.

A passerby, Dwain Daniels III, and her son, Jim Webb, helped pull Webb to safety at her State Road 29 home.

Daniels said this morning that Webb is in an induced coma as doctors perform two operations to remove part of her leg. He added doctors are concerned about infections, particularly because alligators have significant amounts of bacteria in their mouths.

Daniels said he used a low-power rifle to shoot the alligator in its right eye. Wildlife officials haven’t located the alligator as of this morning.

"They’ll need to get down to that dam because he’ll be floating tomorrow," Daniels said.
