GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A University of Florida history professor was found dead in his apartment days after he was last seen by colleagues.
The Gainesville Sun reports authorities found the body of 48-year-old Alan Petigny on Thursday after History Department Chairwoman Ida Altman reported him missing.
Altman told authorities that Petigny hadn't shown up for classes all week and the last time his colleagues last remembered seeing him was on Sept. 23.
Police say a roommate answered the door and said he hadn't seen him in several days. University police Officer Jessica Lynn Zarate noted that she smelled a foul odor near Petigny's bedroom. She found him face down on his bedroom floor.
Colleagues told the Sun Petigny had health problems. Police say there were no signs of foul play.
