Jupiter took one for the team Monday.
According to Gawker , the massive planet in our solar system took a giant hit from a meteor so we didn't have to.
The meteor was spotted by amateur U.S. astronomers. According to the report, the hit could have saved Earth from a massive collision.
Gawker reports Dan Peterson of Racine, Wisconsin, was observing Jupiter on Monday when he saw the bright flash on the surface of the planet.
Peterson posted video of the event online.
