PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - A driver in an SUV veered into a canal Friday afternoon and died despite attempts to help him.

A passerby saw the accident on Southern Boulevard about a mile-and-a-half west of Twenty Mile Bend, and waved down an off-duty sheriff's deputy.

"They saw the driver in the vehicle kicking out the front windshield..the driver was successful in kicking it out... he came out started to swim back to shore the witness had a rope he was going to throw to him... he looked down to untie the rope and when he looked up...the gentlemen went underwater," said Lt. Michael Reardon with the Palm Beach county Sheriff's Office.

The off duty deputy and witness dove in the water but couldn't find the driver.

It took three hours of searching to find the victim.

The SUV was later pulled out of the water and no other people were inside.
