BELLE GLADE, Fla. - Spectators at Friday night's Glades Central High School football game saw a halftime show that they will never forget. Charles Moorer, Jr., was very nervous leading up to the game.
"Right now I'm very excited," he said. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity." As Band Director for the Raiders, it is his job to make sure that the halftime show goes off without a hitch.
This time, though, the pressure was all on him. "Why not? It's the biggest stage here in Belle Glade," he said.
Moorer's unsuspecting girlfriend, Shakendra Murray, is Director of the school's drill team. Each Friday night, together, the couple cheers on their team
This halftime suddenly turned into showtime. With the band playing the couple's song, 'You Are So Beautiful', Moorer made his move. Down on one knee he went to ask the question of a lifetime. "Will you marry me?," the words amplified over the loud speakers at the stadium.
Without missing a beat, Murray said 'yes'. The band played on as the fans in the stands went wild. It was a big surprise for them and for the bride-to-be.
"This came out of nowhere. I was not expecting this," said Murray. "He proposed to me and I just started crying. I can't describe the feeling right now. I'm just very, very excited. I'm just shaking because I was not expecting this."
The special moment under the Friday night lights was made even better with a Glades Central High School football victory over Rockledge.
The final score was 34 to 12. But it was the newly engaged director of the band who says he felt like he scored the big win.
