FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A Vero Beach man is accused of selling four calves he did not own and leasing a cattle pasture he did not own in Fort Pierce, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara.
William James, Boyer, 51, was arrested on Wednesday, he faces four counts of grand theft for stealing a commercial farm animal and one grand theft charge.
In May, Boyer contacted Lazaro Caballero of Okeechobee, asking if Caballero wanted to graze cattle on land Boyer said he owned, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities say Boyer did not own the land, but Caballero was not aware and paid Boyer $3,500 in cash to place cattle on the property for one year.
In July, Caballero hired Juan Menendez of Okeechobee to have the pasture mowed, and Menendez arranged for his employee Juan Carlos Perez to do the mowing, according to detectives.
Perez, thinking Boyer had the authority to sell the cattle on the pasture, bought four calves for $600. Authorities said Menendez thought the cattle were under Boyer's control.
When Menedez asked Caballero if he could buy more calves, Caballero became suspicious and contacted the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, according to authorities.
"We have charged Mr. Boyer with grand theft for leasing a pasture he didn't own," St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara said in a written release. "We also charged him with stealing four calves that he sold even though he did not own them."
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office also says it needs additional information to find another 45 stolen calves and cows in the case.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Agricultural Crimes Unit at 772-462-3213.
Boyer is currently being held at the Indian River County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
