ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - Two teen inmates at the St. Lucie County jail were arrested after accusations they beat Tyler Hadley, the Port St. Lucie teen accused of fatally bludgeoning his parents with a hammer, following a "jail house cake" incident, according to records released Wednesday.
Woodson Fluerine and Michael Garofolo each were arrested Wednesday on a felony battery by person detained in prison or jail facility charge in connection with the Dec. 1 incidents, records state.
A Fort Pierce grand jury indicted Hadley, who turns 18 on Friday, on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the July deaths of his parents, Mary Jo Hadley, 47, and 54-year-old Blake Hadley.
Hadley on Dec. 7 told sheriff's investigators he promised Fluerine he'd prepare "a jail house cake" with cookies for Fluerine's 18th birthday, which was Dec. 4, records state. Hadley changed his mind and consumed the cookies.
"Fluerine became irate at the victim and told him he had ruined his birthday plans," records state.
Fluerine asked Hadley to go in his cell to talk.
Security video shows Fluerine punching Hadley, who doesn't defend himself, according to records. Fluerine stops and looks to be talking to Hadley before resuming with the punches. He started and abruptly stopped several times.
"Fluerine continues his attack for approximately six minutes," records state.
At one point Garofolo enters and punches Hadley three times in the face.
An investigator noted inmates use distraction techniques to attract the attention of deputies away from combatants. They also post lookouts to watch deputies' actions.
Garofolo was looking directly at the control tower, and several inmates stood in front of the area where the fight happened, preventing anyone from seeing directly in the cell.
An investigator tried to speak with Fluerine and Garofolo, but they wanted legal representation.
Asked why he didn't report the incident when it happened, Hadley said, "I don't know."
