ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Port Charlotte man is in custody Friday morning after a motorist on Interstate 95 in Indian River County reported a man was shooting from a southbound vehicle, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.

Thomas Patrick Ellis, 55, is being questioned by St. Lucie sheriff's deputies after he was taken into custody at a gas station on Okeechobee Road.

It doesn't appear that any people or vehicles were struck by gunfire. There also doesn't appear to be any reason for the apparent gunfire, according to the St. Lucie Sheriff's Office.

At 7:47 a.m., a southbound motorist on I-95 in Indian River County called 911 to report a man was shooting from a southbound vehicle. The caller followed the person into St. Lucie County.

State and local law enforcement officials followed the man as he exited I-95 at Okeechobee Road and went to a RaceTrac gas station.

The man entered the store and was taken into custody at 8:33 a.m. by sheriff's deputies and Fort Pierce police.

Investigators recovered a gun.

No other information was immediately available.
