ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Those who wish to help a St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputy who became ill with a rare disease can make tax-deductible, charitable donations to the St. Lucie County Crime Prevention League, a news release states.

Deputy Tommy Worthington, 39, became ill in April and is being treated at a hospital in Miami. A former Port St. Lucie police officer, Worthington, who is married, joined the sheriff's office in 2009.

Hundreds attended a benefit barbecue at the sheriff's office last week, donating almost $13,000.

Although Worthington's illness wasn't specified, a news release stated his treatment and recovery are expected to be lengthy.

Tax-deductible, charitable donations can be made by sending a check or money order to the St. Lucie County Crime Prevention League. Include a notation on the check or money order indicating it's for Worthington.

Donations can be mailed to the St. Lucie County Crime Prevention League, c/o St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, 4700 W. Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL, 34981-4825.
