JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - There may be a lot of smoke today near the Savannas Preserve State Park. The Florida Department of Environmental is conducting a prescribed burn at the park weather permitting.
FDEP officials say the prescribed burn will consist of approximately 1 acre of Sand Pine Scrub in an area ¼ mile East of Green River Parkway, ½ mile South of Walton Road,
State environmentalists say prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
