PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - John Turner looks at the police vans down the block from his house on Pine Valley Street and shakes his head.
"It was an easy mark and they went there," said Turner.
He's talking about what happed early Monday morning. Police say at least one and probably two or more people broke into the home of Turner's 94 year-old neighbor.
Somewhere along the line, there was a confrontation between victim and suspects. Neighbors say the woman was smacked around a bit and held down as the suspects were inside.
Police say the woman was treated and released for her injuries and police say it could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for something she was wearing on her wrist.
The victim had a Lifeline Personal Response System in the home. She's one of nearly 200 customers of the Martin Health System Auxiliary's program.
"There's no way of telling the outside what's going on so by pushing the button, everyone is alerted," said Ro Meyer, president of the Martin Health System Auxiliary.
In this case, when the victim pushed the button, her neighbors were alerted, who contacted police. Lifeline was also notified, and an operator called in over her intercom, an unexpected event for the burglars.
"I think the intercom system, they were surprised by this and fled the scene," said Port St. Lucie Sergeant Frank Sabol.
The victim was too shaken to speak and neighbors are hoping this was just an isolated incident.
"This is a safe neighborhood. We all look out for each other, nothing ever happens here," added Turner.
The Martin Health System Auxiliary uses the monthly monitoring fees from Lifeline to fund philanthropic contributions to the overall health system.
