PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Eric Johnson is cherishing every moment with his family even more now. Police said he was one of several customers, along with a couple of employees, who were held hostage during the robbery on Friday afternoon at the U.S. 1 Radio Shack.
"He had the gun out, and he came around, and I said to him, 'Are you kidding me?' He said, 'No, I'm not kidding you,' and he started pushing us towards the back to get into the back room," recalled Johnson.
Jim Kulis, Johnson's co-worker, was with him, also shopping for cables at the Radio Shack. Kulis said he had seen the surveillance video.
"It takes you right back to it," Kulis said, of watching the video. "My thinking just hasn't been clear, and I'm still trying to process it."
When Kulis realized he was staring down the barrel of a gun, his mind started racing.
"I'm thinking, I just got engaged, my fiance,'" said Kulis. "I'm thinking about my family, thinking I'm the only son in my family, what's it going to be like if I'm not there?"
Kulis and Johnson lay on the floor while police say two suspected gunmen robbed the store of merchandise.
Johnson is thankful he didn't bring his young son inside with him, since he typically keeps him close during his lunch breaks.
"Yeah, it was definitely scary," Johnson said. "I've never been in a situation like that before."
Police are looking for the suspects, whom they describe as two African American males in their late 20s. One was 5’6” with a medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt, and dark green sweatpants. Another was 5’10” with a slim build. He wore a blue shirt, brown sweatpants and a brown knit cap. Both had white T-shirts over their faces, and both wore gloves.
As for Kulis and Johnson, the two were back at their jobs Saturday. Kulis said his perspective has changed.
"You want to play it off, when everything's all said and done," Kulis said. "Like, I'm OK, I'm OK, and this and that. But you're not."
