PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A common law husband and wife have been identified as the couple found dead inside a Port St. Lucie home, but police tonight are still only calling it a death investigation.
51-year-old Frank Houck and 58-year-old Irene Reiss were found by a neighbor Sunday. Neighbors had their suspicions that something might be going on behind closed doors, but they're still a bit in shock by what's happened.
Colleen Carr remembers when her kids would walk by 335 NE Solida Circle and laugh as the two older boys who lived there would attack them with water balloons. But there's nothing innocent about the scene today with crime scene tape up and detectives in and out of the home.
"My sons aren't coming outside after school right now. I don't even want them knowing what's going on," said Carr.
Next door neighbor James Harrelson heard a woman screaming outside yesterday afternoon just before 3 p.m. He went in the home, and found Frank Houck and Irene Reiss both cold to the touch.
"She was in the living room laying on the couch and he was sitting at kitchen table with a beer in his hand and his head leaning back," said Harrelson.
Harrelson claimed he didn't see any blood so he's not sure if they were killed or if something else happened.
Harrelson always had his suspicions about possible illegal activity at the home and told his grandchildren to stay away from there. Other neighbors echoed those thoughts, but still described the couple as friendly.
"She loved her kids and she was a happy person when she was outside and we would wave,." said Carr.
Frank Houck served about two and a half years in state prison on burglary charges. He got out last February.
Houck's two sons also have rap sheets and are currently both in jail on burglary charges.
Reiss has a criminal history dating to 2009 with arrests related to evidence destroying and drug possession, FDLE records show.
Despite that checkered history, it's still disturbing for neighbors to see the police tape blocking the road, while trying to figure out what happened.
"It's not what is supposed to happen here. We watch each other's back, we know each other well and we like it like that," said Carr.
Police are not talking about possible suspects right now only saying they are confident they will solve this case.
