PORT ST. LUCIE — Just before noon, Port St. Lucie police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 2200 block of Genoa Street.
According to Acting Assistant Port St. Lucie Chief Lieutenant William Vega, a couple had an altercation that became physical, and the man stabbed the woman in the stomach.
She reportedly ran to a neighbor's house and the police were called.
Vega says police tried contacting the man by calling his cell phone and by a "throw" phone placed in the house, but they had no response.
Later in the afternoon, police saw the man in a room where he seemed to be in bad physical shape.
According to police, he had slit his wrists, so at about 3:30 p.m. police went inside and removed him by ambulance.
He was transported to a local hospital and faces and attempted murder charge. The woman has undergone emergency surgery.
Police initially thought the man and woman were married, but now don't believe that's the case.
