PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Help for tornado-ravaged communities in Oklahoma is coming from all corners of the nation - including south Florida. Volunteers from the local chapters of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are already in Oklahoma. Others are just now getting the call to bring help to where it is needed most.
"I'm sure it will not be the easiest thing I've ever done," said Scott Hoover of Stuart, who is a Lieutenant with the Salvation Army.
In just days, Hoover will fly right into the heart of hard-hit Moore, Oklahoma. There, for at least two weeks, he will help with food and water distribution.
"People go for days not eating or drinking and they don't realize how important that is for them to keep their strength up to be able to get through this challenging time," he said.
Hoover has responded to natural disasters before, including hurricanes ripping through Florida and nearby states. But never has he walked through the damage of a tornado like the one that barreled through this week.
"You see what is on the news and you see what's going on but once we get there first-hand, I know it can be very difficult," Hoover said.
Port St. Lucie resident and American Red Cross volunteer Mike Molyneux is already on the ground helping in Oklahoma. "I saw the damage on both sides of the highway," he said. "Quite a lot of extensive damage."
Molyneux is been surveying that immense damage, tasked with gaging just how much aid will be needed. "A lot of damage and really feel sorry for what they are going through," he said. "It's going to be a long time for them to recover."
On Thursday, May 23, WPTV NewsChannel 5 will hold a live telethon for the American Red Cross relief effort in Oklahoma from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
