PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A man was shot and killed at Sportsman's Park in Port St. Lucie Wednesday just before 9 p.m., according to a Port St. Lucie Police Department Public spokesperson.

When police arrived to the scene, they found Marcus Demar Samuel lying on the access way leading to the basketball court.

Two Little League baseball games were taking place less than one hundred yards away.

According to police, Samuel and the shooting suspect, Terry McKeliver Jr., were playing basketball and during the game they began to argue. Police said the argument then led into a parking lot across the street from the basketball courts, and Samuel was shot.

McKeliver and another person then fled the scene in a vehicle, police spokesperson Tom Nichols said. McKeliver was later stopped by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Samuel was taken to the hospital and later died from the gunshot wound.

Jeff Harkcom of Port St. Lucie was coaching his son's baseball game when the shots were fired.

"It was very chaotic. You know, it's something you don't expect here in Port St. Lucie," said Harkcom. "Playing the all-American game and gunshots break out less than a hundred yards away."

Harkcom said the kids were shaken by the events.

"There's several of the kids on my team that their parents are saying they're not bringing their kids back to the baseball field," said Harkcom.

Harkcom is an off-duty emergency responder and said he and two other off-duty emergency responders assisted the shooting victim until an ambulance arrived.

After speaking with deputies, McKeliver was arrested for unrelated charges and the death of Samuel is still active and under investigation.
