A Tuesday afternoon crash on Veterans Memorial Parkway involving three vehicles and a utility pole left six people injured and closed a portion of the roadway, according to Port St. Lucie police and St. Lucie County Fire District officials.
Accident Area

Emergency officials were called about 2:10 p.m. to the incident in the area of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Southeast Hideaway Circle, St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said.

The crash happened after the driver of a Dodge Ram pick-up that was headed northeast on Veterans Memorial Parkway fell asleep, said Officer Tom Nichols, Port St. Lucie police spokesman. The pick-up truck struck a utility pole and went airborne.

A red sports car was headed southwest on Veterans Memorial Parkway and got "clipped" by the Dodge Ram, tearing a portion of the roof off the sports car, Nichols said.

The utility pole landed on a Hyundai sport utility vehicle, leaving two adults and two children inside with non life-threatening injuries. Those four and a person in the sports car were taken to a local hospital.

The Dodge Ram driver was flown to a trauma center with non life-threatening injuries.

A number of Florida Power & Light Co. trucks remained at the scene as of about 3:50 p.m.
