PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A semi and a school bus collided Monday afternoon in St. Lucie County killing one boy onboard and injuring 19 others, according to St. Lucie County School District spokesperson Janice Karst.

The student killed in the crash has been identified as 9-year-old Aaron Beauchamp, of Port St. Lucie.

Tuesday morning, Karst updated the number of injured from 14 to 19.

Five students are being treated at St. Mary's Medical Center and are in stable but critical condition. Seven students are being treated at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. Six others were treated and released from various hospitals Monday night. The bus driver is among the injured.

The bus, from Frances K. Sweet Elementary, appeared to be heading west on Okeechobee Road and was attempting to turn on Midway Road and was hit by an eastbound tractor trailer, driven by 24-year-old Charles Cooper, from Martinsville, Virginia.

"It appears that from the witness that we had the school bus made the left turn in front of the tractor trailer," said Lt. Jeff Johnson with the Florida Highway Patrol.

The impact forced the tractor trailer to overturn on the shoulder and the bus to spin around and come to a stop facing north on Midway Road.

The school bus driver, 56-year-old Albert Hazen, was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. Hazen was reported in serious condition.

The students who were not injured were taken to the Emergency Operations Center and released to their parents.

"Any time children are involved it's a bad thing. It always is a tragedy, especially when children are involved," Lt. Johnson said.

Troopers say speeding did not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a witness who went inside the bus after the crash reported that the children were wearing seatbelts and several were unconscious.
