PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- River’s Edge Elementary School was temporarily on lockdown today after reports of shooting activity in a wooded area behind the school.
Port St. Lucie police and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 5600 NE St. James Drive after reports that 4 to 6 shots were heard.
Authorities canvassed the area for the origin of the shots.
After an extensive search, deputies determined that the shots came from a residence on the other side of the river behind the school, according to Port St. Lucie police spokesperson Frank Sabol.
The resident was legally shooting his firearm on private property, Sabol said.
Upon learning the circumstances of the shots, River’s Edge Elementary lifted the lockdown.
