PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Port St. Lucie police are sending out a reminder to gun owners to take their firearms out of their cars, and bring them inside.
So far this year, police have investigated 13 cases where guns were stolen from cars. In 11 of those cases, the cars were unlocked. Since 2009, nearly 50 firearms have been stolen from cars in the city, and 85-percent of the time, there was no sign of forced entry.
"The guns are a danger and the guns are out on the streets and we don't want guns to get in the wrong hands. So we're trying to encourage the public to keep vehicle doors locked, remove all belongs and especially the firearms from the car," said police spokesman Tom Nichols.
Of the firearms missing, 19 have since been recovered. One of them was found in New York. It's unknown if any of the stolen guns were used in criminal activity.
