PORT ST. LUCIE — A man found after midnight on the side of the road with prescription drugs, four handguns, ammunition and a knife faces several charges, according to recently released records.
Kenneth Earle Nickerson, 30, was arrested on charges including possession of controlled substance (Xanax), possession of controlled substance (oxycodone), loitering and prowling, driving with suspended license with knowledge and possession of drug paraphernalia following the 12:42 a.m. Saturday incidents.
A Port St. Lucie police officer spotted a "suspicious" Ford truck parked along a tree line on Southwest McComb Avenue. The driver and passenger side doors were open and the interior lights on.
After making a U-turn to return to the truck, the officer asked the driver, Nickerson, to put the vehicle in park. Nickerson appeared nervous, fumbling with two partially smoked cigarettes.
The officer asked Nickerson if there was a reason he was shaking so much, and he said he was nervous. Nickerson said he had a pistol in the vehicle's center console.
Police found Nickerson had at least three loaded handguns in holsters on his waist and under his arms. He also had spare magazines and a knife. In total, police found four handguns.
Nickerson said he was going to meet a friend who lived up the street. He said he planned to walk the rest of the way.
"Kenneth was unable to tell me why he would park approximately 0.10 of a mile from his destination, or why he had so many weapons with so much back up ammunition," a report states.
Police spoke to the friend, who said Nickerson was supposed to arrive earlier to go to a bar. The friend said Nickerson had carried a handgun while drinking at the bar in the past, but couldn't imagine why Nickerson would have four pistols and extra ammunition. The friend also didn't know why Nickerson was on the side of the road when there was room to park in his driveway.
Nickerson was not arrested in connection with any weapons or ammunition related offense.
In Nickerson's vehicle, police found two pills of the painkiller oxycodone, a pill of the anti-anxiety medication Xanax and powdered pill residue. He said he didn't have a prescription. Nickerson, of the 500 block of Southeast Voltair Terrace in Port St. Lucie, said he's getting help from a doctor for an addition to pain medication.
