PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - If the world doesn't end next week, Port St. Lucie resident Alexander Garcia said society could still collapse, riots could break out, or perhaps Florida could be hit with an all-too-common natural disaster.
In that case, Garcia said he's ready with the three necessities: Food, water and a hidden shelter somewhere off the map.
Garcia is a doomsday prepper-- someone who stocks up on survival gear and an emergency shelter.
He teamed up with several other preppers to stock what he calls a "bugout" shelter. The location is top-secret.
"Take me north to my other secret location, in case I ever need to bug out and leave the state of Florida," he said, showing his state map, but not revealing any details.
The former Marine said he learned preparedness and stocking up from his military service, which included surviving a bomb explosion in Afghanistan.
"If I made it through that, I think I should be good out here," he said.
Garcia believes it doesn't matter whether or not you think a Mayan-predicted apocalypse is coming. He simply wants to be ready in case of chaos.
"December 21st is the end of a calendar, of a cycle,” he explained. “It's not the end of the world. NASA or the government will say, 'oh, nothing bad's going to happen, or doomsday is coming around next week.' There's always that one, or group, of people that don't believe in that, and they might panic."
Although NASA has proved the world will not end, debunking every astronomical idea for 2012 End of Days theorists, Garcia believes it's better to be safe than sorry.
As for those who may mock him, he said he may have the last laugh.
"If that day ever comes, and that person was not prepared, he'll think of me, and be like, 'Wow, maybe I should have listened,’" he said.
