FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A South Florida man was being held without bond in the death of a 1-month-old baby found in the trunk of a car.
Janus Saintil was being held Saturday at the Broward County jail on charges of murder, carjacking with a firearm or weapon, kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and armed robbery.
The Broward Sheriff's Office says Saintil kidnapped the baby's mother, another female and a male adult Thursday. He allegedly left the adults in Port St. Lucie and returned to Broward County with the baby.
The baby's body was found Friday after Saintil parked the car next to a police officer. Coral Springs police Lt. Joe McHugh identified the baby as Saintil's son, Josiah Saintil.
Jail records did not show whether Saintil had an attorney.
Port St. Lucie police are currently working with the Broward County Sheriff's Office to investigate a case involving the death of a baby.
"At gunpoint, he directed the driver to Port St. Lucie," said Tom Nichols, Port St. Lucie Police spokesman, speaking of Janus Saintil, 24, of Deerfield Beach.
A car with Janus Saintil, three other adults and Saintil's nearly 2-month-old son drove north from Broward County Thursday night.
At some point, Saintil dropped off the baby at a home somewhere in Port St. Lucie.
"I'd rather not say that at the moment. I'd rather refer that to a later date," said Nichols.
A tip led us to a neighborhood where neighbors, off-camera, said there was a lot of police activity this afternoon and where Saintil had recently been spotted.
After dropping off the child, Saintil had the driver go to a Hess gas station on Bayshore Boulevard. He demanded the others get cash from the ATM. They screamed. Saintil got back in the car and drove off alone.
"The father did obtain the child and somehow ended up back down in Broward County," said Nichols.
Police say baby Josiah was later found dead in the trunk of the car, in Coral Springs.
