PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — A 55-year-old man who survived after police say he shot himself after fatally shooting his wife with a shotgun in September was booked Friday in the St. Lucie County jail on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the incident, according to an affidavit released Friday and a jail official.

Robert Fein is accused of shooting his wife, Sharon Fein, 44, in September and of trying to kill himself. Robert Fein shot himself in the head and was found alive but bleeding severely on a bed in their home in the 500 block of Northwest Kilpatrick Avenue.

A shotgun was on the floor, and Sharon Fein, who was pronounced dead, was leaning against the foot of the bed.

Port St. Lucie Police learned through Sharon Fein's sister that they were married for nearly 20 years but were experiencing a "tough divorce." Sharon Fein was living part time elsewhere with a person who'd recently become a boyfriend. An investigator also learned Robert Fein got Sharon Fein to visit by saying their dog wasn't doing well and they needed to talk about "putting him down."

Sharon Fein decided to visit, which was the last time her boyfriend and family heard from her.

Police went to the home Sept. 9 after a 911 caller from New York said she had not been able to contact her sister — Sharon Fein — all day, which was unusual.

Police found a notebook in the kitchen, which had information including instructions on what to do with the pets, names and phone numbers.

A 34-page letter appeared to discuss Robert and Sharon Fein's relationship with Robert Fein referring to himself as "I" and Sharon as "Sherri."

He made reference to Sharon Fein "cheating on him, pursuing a divorce and ending his life." He also referred to her with a derogatory term.

"She is a very part of me. I walked through every tough and great part of my life with her holding my hand and at this point she can never be replaced," an affidavit states. "All I can hope is that when we are both gone we will walk into Heaven holding hands just as we did walking this earth."

"Sorry for all you out there that think this is sick, but it's not. I am totally sane. This is a Romeo and Juliet stuff. True love — That's all this is. She ended my life when she left. We all know she has been brain washed in some way," the affidavit states.

Robert Fein was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce after the incident. He was released from Lawnwood Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said Friday.

Robert Fein was booked in the St. Lucie County jail at 2:18 a.m. Friday, a jail official said.
