PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - One of the largest churches in Port St. Lucie could get a financial boost from an unusual source-- its bicycling pastor, who plans to cycle more than a hundred miles to raise $60,000 for his 60th birthday.
Rev. Dr. Wayne Williams, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Port St. Lucie, said he's hoping to harvest donations.
He plans to bicycle 150 miles through St. Lucie County this Saturday, with a goal of using the funds to improve the church's sound and computer systems.
"I turn 60 this year, in this month, October," he explained. "I wanted to do something to mark my 60th birthday, and I wanted to do something I hadn't done before."
So far, he says he has pledges for $30,000, and dozens of the church's 800 members have pledged to donate more after his weekend ride.
