PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A 5-year-old girl was fighting for her life Saturday afternoon after being found at the bottom of the family’s pool by one of her sisters in the 1500 block of Saxony Street in Port St. Lucie, said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, spokesman for Port St. Lucie Police Department.

The child’s mother started CPR on the child while rescue crews were en route, Sabol said. He said the child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Sabol said the mother was making lunch when she asked the older sisters, who are in their early teens, about the whereabouts of the child. They went looking for their sister and found her at the bottom of the pool at 1538 Saxony Street. The mother said the child had been missing no more than five minutes when found in the pool.

The pool is surrounded by a child gate, Sabol said. He said when rescue crews arrived, they found the gate open. However, they have not been able to determine if the gate was open before the child fell in the pool or if it was opened by the family when they spotted the child in the pool
