PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - More than two dozen would-be voters became outraged, after learning they couldn't vote at Port St. Lucie's Robert E. Minsky Gymnasium Tuesday night.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara says at 7 p.m., when the polling place closed, his deputy stood at the back of the line. He advised anyone who showed up after, it was too late to vote.
Precinct clerk Tomas Mojica says this is standard procedure.
Sheriff Mascara says about 25-30 people arrived after 7 p.m., thinking the polling place was closing at 8 p.m., based on what they said they'd seen on the news.
Mojica says he tried to tell them they were wrong, but they blew him off, yelled and called him a liar.
Mojica says he called for backup. Deputies came out to the gym off Darwin Boulevard and reiterated the 7 p.m. closing time, according to Sheriff Mascara. He says the crowd then left peacefully, and there were no arrests.
