PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Bob Moss of Port St. Lucie is a proud papa after a story his daughter told him Tuesday.
The 80-year-old Moss talks with all seven of his kids just about every day. When his oldest daughter Patty Wesner called him, it sounded at first like one of the jokes they play on one another.
"But she had such enthusiasm in her voice, I knew she couldn't be making it up," said Moss.
Wesner told her dad she was driving to work in upstate New York on Route 22 near Salem when a Brinks truck passed her on a bumpy country road. First, a box of change flew out.
"Then he hit a second bump and then dollar bills just flew out of the back of the truck," Wesner said.
Wesner gathered up all the money, all 11-thousand dollars, called 9-1-1 and waited for police. If she had left with the money, no one would have been the wiser.
"There was nothing, there was nobody, there were no houses, fields on either side of you," said Wesner.
Even as the director of a non-profit museum that struggles to raise money, Wesner said it never crossed her mind to keep any of it.
"I never even thought of that. I knew it's not my money. It's not mine to take, even a dollar of it."
Bob Moss says this episode has allowed him to finally answer a question that had been nagging at him for years.
"I always say to myself 'well, did I do the right thing, did I raise them OK?' Now looking back, I can look at my children and say 'I did a pretty good job,' " Moss said laughing.
